"Boyz II Men" Mentoring Program (continued)
The target population will be reached by making presentations at area schools, talking to
principals, teachers, and counselors through flyers, mailouts, and bulletin boards. Once referrals
are received, youth will be contacted, interviewed, and asked to complete a questionnaire/
application. Recruitment is ongoing and youth may enter the program at any time. The
questionnaire will gather demographic information about each participant, including age, income
level of family household confirmation, etc.
Through the questionnaire we will identify participants who have been in fights/violent events.
We will obtain incident information from teachers, parents, students, and other school personnel.
Students will develop a safety plan to avoid fights and will be monitored for adherence to the
plan. Participants who fall in this category will receive additional mentors and models.
In our quest to change lives, Boys II Men will create an atmosphere for men to come in and
transform the lives of youth through example and by becoming a mentor. The mentors,
volunteers form all walks of life, will set forth models after which the boys will follow. They
will share their life experiences with the participants, establishing credibility with the youth, and
giving them advice on how to handle many of life's challenges. They will also serve as
counselors to whom the boys can consult with at any time.

Powershops, sessions with a motivational speaker, will be held quarterly to inspire the
participants to set goals and strive to achieve them. Informal small group discussions will he

held on a weekly basis where participants are encouraged to share their weekly experiences or

challenges they may be facing. Role-playing will be a significant part of these sessions.

During the summer participants will engage in an 8 week summer enrichment camp where
classes in conflict resolution and leadership skills will be taught daily. Role-playing, skits,
videos, and guest speakers will be used in these classes. Participants 16-18 years old will also be
used as junior camp counselors.

Field trips to historical, educational, and cultural sites will be used to expand the horizons of the
participants. more
