"Boyz
II Men" Mentoring Program (continued)
This
program has been successful in opening the doors to a whole new world
of opportunities
and
experiences for these young men. We are proud to report that last year
none of the youth
participating
in the program were arrested, picked up for curfew violations, or placed
on long
term
suspensions from school. The participants took part in 45 Mentoring sessions,
15
educational
field trips, 10 recreational field trips, 10 sessions with guest speakers,
10 sessions on
conflict
resolution, and 12 sessions on leadership development. Over the past eight
years Boys II
Men
have provided educational, recreational, tutoring, and Mentoring programs
to over 500
youth
throughout the city of New Orleans. Boys II Men has taken a leadership
role in addressing
specific
issues facing our youth. Issues such as violent crimes, school violence,
teen pregnancy,
participation
in illegal activities, attitudes and moral values have all been addressed.
| Boys II Men is a year round program. It will operate once a week during the school year and | |||||
| eight weeks during the summer. The hours during school operation are 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. | |||||
| The program also meets one Saturday per month, (4th Saturday), for field trips and other | |||||
| activities. The program will be considered successful if the checklist, evaluations, | |||||
| documentation and all other evidence reveal: | |||||
< That 75% of all participants who begin the program completed the program. |
| < That 75% of all participants learned at least 3 techniques to solve conflicts without violence | |||||
| < That total suspensions/expulsions are reduced by 75% by the end of the program year. | |||||
| The first alternative the participants experienced was their participation in the program. One of | |||||
| the main reasons juveniles get involved in criminal activities is because of the amount of idle | |||||
time
they have. What we experienced was that if you keep young people occupied,
they are less
prone
to get in trouble. The boys are involved in many activities: Christian
Youth of Faith,
| Summer Camp, After-School Tutoring, Recreational Activities in the Evening, Tuesday Night | |||||
Mentoring
Class, Field Trips, The B.O.M.B. Drill Team (Believers On A Mission for
| Breakthrough), Youth Choirs. | |||||
| All of the participants went through extensive training on making long/short goals. Not only did | |||||
| they learn to make goals but they also learned to keep the goals they made. "Always have a | |||||
| word," is a phrase they heard constantly throughout the life of the program. | |||||
| Overall, this program was and has been successful for several years. Bishop Charles Brown | |||||
| personally spends time mentoring these young men into manhood. He is breaking the cycle of | |||||
| poverty, crime, and low self-esteem by instilling wholesome principles of integrity, honesty, | |||||
| responsibility, conflicts resolution, and excellence into the hearts and minds of these boys. | |||||
| Bishop Brown has made a tremendous impact on these young boys. Throughout its 24 year | |||||
| history, the Full Gospel Church of God in Christ has established itself as a viable force not only | |||||
| in this community, but also in the city of New Orleans and state of Louisiana. Bishop Brown is | |||||
| known and respected by New Orleans city officials and officials of the state of Louisiana. | |||||
He
is committed to raising up a generation of "real
men".
